I am running 3" w/31s. How are 32's and a 4.5" working out? What backspace are you using on your rims? Sorry, new memeber- couldn't find the signature link.

32" is the reccomended side for a 4.5" lift. just as 31s for the 3" lift. hack her up a bit and you can deffinatly be able to fit the 32s on the 3" kit.

the best thing you can learn to do as a new member is use the search button. This has been covered before ^_^

where in massachusetts are you?

I'm running 32s with 3" + BB = 4.75"lift. If you want to use your stock wheels, I recommend TSL Swamper 32x9.50s or BFG 33x10.50 ATs. If you want to buy 15x8s get cheapie steelies, they all have 3.75" backspacing and you can run 32x11.50s or even 34x10.50 LTBs (only measure 33.25"). For all these tires to stuff up in the well the fenders MUST be cut back, and the flare altered and remounted. If it's a trail only vehicle, get the 32x9.50 TSL (a big 32 - 32.6") they are cheap and have awesome traction on everything.

I run 32's with the RE4.5 Super flex and i could run 35's if i wanted to bumpstop more, but i prefer the flex, and 35's also cause more stress on that ole dana 30

The Cape. Sorry, I'll do a longer search before I do this again.

You should be able to fit and stuff 32's with a 4.5 with minimal to no trimming. 33's are where things start to get a little tight and fender trimming and proper bump-stopping start to come into play.

I'm running a 4.5" Rustys lift with 32" BFG's on American Racing 767 wheels. I did a lot of searching on here and went with a 4" backspace on the wheels and couldn't be happier with that decision. IMO 3.75 sticks the wheels out too far. Mine stick out about an inch outside of the stock fender flares, and I only needed to trim the very bottom of the flare inside the wheel well. You can't even tell it's trimmed.

32x11.50s on 15x7 rims with 4" backspacing; no rubbing.

I've run this setup on both a 91 and a 99 -- no trimming necessary on the 91 running 32 x 11.5 on a 15 x8 with 4.5 BS. Minor trimming necessary on the 99.

IMO, it all depends on what type of driving/offroading you will be doing. after i installed the 4.5" lift and 32x11.50's, i thought i was good to go. as far as bumpstops, the only ones i installed were the front bumpstops that came with the RE lift. and none in the rear. i had pleanty of room for around the town driving.

but once i went offroad and disconnected my swaybars, that all changed. i had to remove my flares to even before i tried to flex.

here are some pics i've taken in the past to help answer these questions ...

all pics linked to kelp 56k'ers

for reference, here's how far the 32x11.50's stick out when mounted on 15x8 rims with 4" of bs'ing...
with flares...

w/out flares...

first offroad trip...
no bumpstops in rear and rear not completely flexed out. almost no room left...

front fully flexed out...

if i had turned the wheel in the slightest, i would have bent up my fenders

so i broke out the hockey puckes and added bumpstop to the front and that helped out tons...

...but left the rear alone...
http://viewsfrommylens.com/Gallery/albums/album09/IMG_0161.jpg

that wasn't a good idea...

so i got out the metal tools and trimmed the fenders front and rear and relocated the flares up to make the va 5-oh happy. now i have ZERO rubbing with running a little bumpstop up front and trimming front and rear...

i have a set of dpg rear bumpstop plates that will be going in when i go up to 33's with this lift/setup.

hope my experiences/pictures help you out.

Thanks a lot for the pics- they really helped out!

And, I was thinking of becoming a memeber. Met a guy and his wife from Ohio at the Jamboree in MA in 2002 who was a member. I'll have to search and read about the association.

Thanks everyone for the advice and help!

I ran my 32's for 3 years on stock steelies and aluminum wheels (5.25 backspace). Very little trimming, stuffed very well. $ometimes I wish that I would have $tayed there.

With my RE 3.5 and BFG 32's, I have not done enough/any trimming. Last outing I almost tore my fender off coming off of one obstacle, with the tire catching the fender. I still like the combo. Gonna straighten the fender and trim her down a little.

Jason, in your opinion, had you had a more norrow tire, would that had helped? If you had an extra inch, would that have helped? Where exactly did it rub, ie, front well behind or in front of the tire?

I have mine on stock wheels. They rub. I have a 1997. I think I need to get spacers
Where are yours rubbing? This just will help me know what to expect and maybe trim before I go out on the trail, after of course I get the thing done.

If your xj is a daily driver, you will want to have no larger that 9.5 for driving much in heavy snow. Tires wider than 9.5 don't do well in the snow.
