I have a 98 XJ, 6cyl and I broke the little plastic extension coming off the overflow bottle and I'm about to travel from PA back to NY and was wondering if I can just run the hose down to the ground and let the overflow drip our or if the hose needs to be connected to the bottle to prevent overheating, flow coolant, etc.? This si the hose coming from the top of the rad filler neck to the plastic bottle on the opposite side of the jeep. Thanks for any help guys.

You can run it that way it's an open system but why not just stop by a parts store and pick up a generic overflow bottle for under $10 to get you by.

didn't realize they'd have a generic at the parts store, that'll do me until I get a replacement. Thanks.

For now you can just run the hose into the bottle. Its not pressurized in there. All it does is allow for the fluid to escape when hot and suck it back in when cooling. As long as the hose is submerged below the coolant level you won't have any problems.
