oil pump pick up position???

I am putting a new oil pump on my 90 4.0. I have two old oil pumps at my veiwing and i cant figure out how the pickup is suppose to sit. On one of them the screen sits flat to the bottom of the oil pan and on the 2nd one the screen sits more at a 45 degree angle, which is correct.

I don't remember exactlly but on a 96 I owned the screen ended up sitting flat but I kind of recall the pump being at a angle that would make the angled one flat.

Flat, it the way it is supposed to go. Beware of having the pickup hitting the bottom of the pan. It can restrict the oil flow. Get it up an eighth of an inch, no more.
