Yes, AW4 is a robust/reliable tranny and is plenty strong behind the I6. IIRC, some of the later I4 XJs used a ChryCo 3 speed auto (TF999?). It is an adequate tranny.

What should I look out for i.e. major problem yrs or models?

IMO, avoid the early GM V6 powered XJs ('84-'86). The rest are all good. I'm partial to the 1997+ for the modern interior (although the old style interiors do grow on you I find).

There are other issues to research. Which transfer case, which EFI system, which axles front or rear, vacuum disconnect or not, etc.

Get familiar with the search button.
