Oil Slinger?

I just finished replacing the timing chain and gears and noticed that the Haynes Manual shows an "oil slinger" sits infront of the crankshaft gear.
Wasn't one on there when I took it apart!!! Checked in the oil pan too!!!
Do they all have these slingers? The gasket that the timiing chain cover sits in is like a rubber "trough" and oil pools in there and probably gets picked up by the crank sprocket but... I don't no.

My 87 didnt have one in it either when I took the cover off.But I wasn,t the first one in there .It should do allright without it.
