I'm new to the site and here is what I have. Its and 88 XJ Laredo auto with the 242. I'm in the process of redoing the thing. My main problem I think is the Transcase. I knew of the problem when I bought it. The guy I bought it from is a family friend and mechanic. He thought it was also the Tcase. Anyway, when I go from Park to Drive I can "hear" it shift. When I press the gas to go it will go for a moment, then its like something slips and it sounds like something is slipping. It does this in all gears. Am I right to assume the Tcase? Anyother thoughts would be appreciated.

Whats it do in 4wd hi and 4wd low?

I think the same thing. I was more or less just trying to get it to drive on its own power. I drained the fluid last night and everything seemed fine there. BTW.....what fluid do I put back in. I was thinking of removing the DS and see if it still does it when its not under a load.....thoughts??

If there were no shavings the I would look at the rear diff gears next, pull the cover.
