Rear lift hatch rattling around.

Hey folks. My lift hatch on my 92 has a heck of a rattle. It makes quite a racket when I am driving on rough roads or off road. I know my gas shocks are shot as they won't keep the gate lifted when I open it. Would replacing these shocks make a difference? Would they hold the gate in position better?

No, the gas struts wouldn't stop (or cause) the rattling.

Check the hinges for tightness. Also check the latch and the striker plate to make sure they aren't loose.

Also, check, adjust, and possibly augment the threaded rubber bumpers on each side of the hatch.

AMEN. On my 92, I wound up adding some plastic filler "blocks" on the body side to improve the compression on the rubber bump stops.

Also check the interior plastic panel on the lift gate - the one with the rear speaker grills. It's just held on by plastic anchors and if those break, it rattles like a mofo.

A fix for the grooved striker plate is to just rotate it 180 degrees .
