The latest XJs have a rubber boot on the TC output shaft.
I think the change happened in 1996.
Did all the 96 models get the rubber boot, or just the XJs built later for that year?

i believe 96 to be the split year... i would not be suprised if there were some 96's with the new output shaft and some without...

96 was the year, and as far as i know, all 96's have the newer style output on the tcase

So, in '96 they went to the rubber boot.
The TC was again changed in '97. I know because 96 will not interchange with 97.
Any idea what was changed after 96?
Looking at pictures, I can't tell what changed.
