Freeze Plugs

First question, is the engine in or out of the vehicle.
Use brass replacements, keep in mind that you don't want to drive the old one into the block. When I have done it I've drilled the center and threaded a dent puller/slide hammer in and popped it right out. Then I've gone in with a magnet to try to get any shavings out. You can try to smack one side and get it to 'tilt' then pry it out the rest of the way, that works too.
When I put them in I put a light coat of indian head gasket cement around the edge of the hole, it lubes it a bit and then seals it up. The two times I put them in dry I ended up with them seeping coolant.
