"broken crank case breather tube"...

The haynes manual does not cover the removal of these little suckers...

It has cracked and I'm going to have to get a new one. This maybe a stupid question, but before I break it any more, can the front breather tube/elbow be removed without removing the rocker cover ?

Yep - but a small screwdriver can help. Very small. Work it in alongside the elbow, get under the elbow, and pry it out.

It's easy enough to do - I'd suggest a slight oiling on the new one before you pop it in - and work slowly. That small screwdriver might also help to get the last little bit in - just work carefully so you don't tear the new boot...
