Roof Rack Mount

I built a roof rack thich extends from the front of the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. The noise made by the air passing through the front of the rack is very loud. Any suggestions on how much I should shorten the rack, by that I mean move the leading edge rearward, so the noise is less apparent to those in the front seat?

A friend (who has left xj's for good, sadly) had a custom built roofrack with the same problem. He ended up cutting the top rail at the front and relooping it so that it sat back from the bottom rail creating the same angle as the windsheild. Then he welded a chunk of diamond plate across the front of it. It looked a bit like an Xterra's roofrack afterwards and was virtually noiseless...
Just a thought...
