Tranny Wiring Questions

I am looking into buying a xj and he states that the tranny was wired for this.

Tranny is custom wired with 3 switches to the TCU so you can turn off the TCU, a second switch puts the jeep in 2nd gear, and the 3rd switch locks the torque converter for better off-road performance.

Can you please explain what this means?

Its an 87 aw4 4.0

Sorry for the newbie Question.

in stock form the XJ tranny will not (practically) go to 2nd gear in the "1-2" position. his switch allows you to do so. the torque convertor switch will force the lockup of the convertor which makes the tranny drive straight through with no slip, in stock form the computer only does this when cruising in 3rd or OD, but some people use it for extra compression braking offroad.

now why he has a switch to kill the TCU I do not know, seems pointless to me. if you kill the TCU and hit the 2nd gear switch it will actually put it in 3rd (assuming he has it wired the way I'm thinking).
