yeah - working on the front and rear end, thinking before i install the front axke - while its out - good time for a "on the bench" gear install...

will be running 33's for this summer - eventualy 35's maybe 37's some day

both the ford 9" and the HP 44 support 5.13's - so its either 5.13's or 4.88/4.86's

i run a 4.0 with an ax-15 and a stock geared 231...

right now with 235/75's and 3.50's i am loving it (over the 3.07's that i came stock with...) and my top speed is still about the same as it was before...

i know that BrettM wanted to keep 4.88's and 33's, would 5.13's and 33's be terrible?

anyway - that is my newb question for the day...

I am running 5.38's and 35's and feel that for the trail it is a good combo but not for the road. I have a great crawl ratio, but for a DD, I wouldn't do it again. I will probably pick up some 37" DD tires, which should help

it would be good if you don't mind going the speedlimit. you also have a little less overdrive than me (.75 for me, .79 for you right?). A big question is how long until the 35s?

I am running 4.56 with 33's and feel like I am running out of gear on the interstate. I have 2600 rpm at 70 and running much more than that just doesn't feel right. I sure wouldn't go lower though. My junk has well over 200k and a couple hard years of wheelin', so it isn't the tightest xj out there. I would say get the 5.13 and just go straight to the 37's. Good luck.

If you're thinking about it at all.....I would always go with the lower gear. I agree with Brett though.....how long before the 35s go in?

Screw that just go 5.38s and be done :laugh3:

If you're planning on going to 35's then definately get 5.13's. I've ran 4.88's with 31's for a short while and it wasn't too bad: my main problem was that if I went over 70mph my rpm's would go kind of high.
Remember that the 4.0 is a motor that doesn't mind slightly higher RPM's. There is nothing wrong with turning 3K or a little bit over. Anyways, I think your post should have been : convince me that I will not regret not going to 5.38.

I'm running 5.13's on 32's right now... Seems to be alright though, I can do about 60 on the highway at 2500. That's about it though.

It will be money once I slap the 36's on though. Just do the 5.13's, it's not unbearable with 32's, you'll be alright with 33's until you get some 35's on there, then you'll be loving it. I'm willing to bet if you go 4.88's or 4.56's you'll be kicking yourself down the road when you want to upgrade to those 37's. :)

just regear once and do the 5.13's, otherwise you will be hating yourself later when you have to do it again

Just don't caravan to the trail or your buddys will hate you :laugh3:

I had 4.56 and 32" and loved it! Then I jumped to 35" I hate it! I too am trying to decide on 5.13 or 5.38. This is what I know:
With AX-15 and 35" tires you will be doing 3100 rpm at 75mph in 5th with 5.38
2950 rpm at 75mph in 5th with 5.13
2690 rpm at 75mph in 5th with 4.88
I was doing 3000 at 70mph with 4.56 in 5th with 32" and that was my favorite set of gears with that tire size so far.

MHO, If you ever planned to go to the 35" then you will (few can resist inchitis), you should go with at least 5.13. If your not sure then you should still go with 5.13 if you do plan on going 37" EVER.... then go with 5.38. Everybody I have ever talked to siad that they wished they could have gone lower then 4.88 but the front axle is the limiting factor.

No contest man!! Go 5.13's and don't look back. I'm running 36's with 4.88's and its not enough. I still run around in 3rd most of the time instead of OD. My .02.

We just put 5.13's in a buddies CJ with 33's last weekend and he loves it. Kinda whinds up his 302 on the highway but not too bad.

mobs are always right too
