I was parked on a slight hill , front facing lower down the street.
i was in park and had the ebrake on.
when i released the ebrake and went to put it in drive , there was a huge clank, gear grind/slam sort of noise?
Is that normal or is there a problem?

and if it's normal what is causing that sound.
thanks!

Set the e-brake before you put the gear selector in park, then put it in gear before you release the e-brake. It sounds as though the park pawl had a lot of tension on it before you set the e-brake.

I believe this is referred to as Torque Lock.

As mentioned above set the ebrake first. What I usually do is set the ebrake first, take my foot off the regular brake, and let the e-brake catch, then put it into park. No more clunking.

Probably not. If it were bad enough, you wouldn't have been able to get it into gear, though the pawl can become damaged.
