Sand Mountain Enthusiast:

As I am sure many of you know, BLM is in the process of deciding
whether to
<http://www.sandmountain-nv.org/smra_emergency_closure.htm>close
1,000 acres of Sand Mountain due to sensitive species habitat loss.
An advisory subgroup was formed (Friends of Sand Mountain is one of
eight on the subgroup). The
<http://www.crowley-offroad.com/center_for_biological_diversity.htm>Center
for Biological Diversity (CBD) is also on the subgroup, and is
pushing hard for more than 1,000 acres to be closed. It is very
likely that this subgroup won't get to the point of recommending much
of anything due to the hard line taken by the CBD. If you are not
familiar with the CBD, follow the link above to read about their
actions against OHV recreation areas. It is my strong belief that
the CBD will be sending this issue into the legal system in the near
future.

BLM wants to implement some type of "protection" before Labor Day
Weekend. This could be in the form of closure,
encouraging/discouraging particular trails, or increased education.

Because this is likely to end up in court, we need to raise money to
prepare for the fight. This is where we need your help. There are
two ways to help:
1. Make a
<http://www.sandmountain-nv.org/donations.htm>tax-deductible donation
to Friends of Sand Mountain (business or personal).
2. Help gather prizes for our
<http://www.sandmountain-nv.org/silent_auction_2003.htm>Silent
Auction that will be held over Labor Day Weekend. This will be our
main opportunity to raise money. We already have some great prize
packages, but we need more.

If you value Sand Mountain Recreation Area, and don't want to see any
of it closed, now is the time to get involved! What can you do to
help fight the closure?
