Rear Bumper Fab

Just as the title says, i want to fab up a rear bumper. I've searched and got some ideas. Right now i have no tow points, so i would like to integrate 2 D Ring Shackles into the bumper. I would also like to have a 2 inch receiever hitch. Im wondering What i should build the bumper out of, such as material and thickness. Also would like some tips on mounting, and reinforcing so the bumper will be strong enough, if i have to tow something, or pull someone out of something they shouldn't have gotten into in the first place :laugh3:. Any help would be appreciated.

i think the best mounting system out there is a hitch..
Hidden Hitch sells a reciever that tucks up nicely and a bumper built off that system would be mounted plent well for whatever....

dont be afraid to make something off of something else...

some people build it out of tube... but you have to know how to fab with tube.. i dont... so i made myself a bumper with 2x4 steel 3/16" thick
i built it with tapered ends for clearanace... and it looks better. i bought one of those frame rail brackets from the factory and put it up to some 3/16" steel... drilled the holes to match and bolted it up. some welding.... paint...
i added recovery points.. and integrated a hitch that is flush with the 2x4
i ended up with this
F-gNmzZw5ctWI2FCDL7Epzg

the pieces that protect the 1/4 panel are 2x2 3/16" and they WILL support the weight of the Jeep.

i built the bumper for clearance. i used to have a 2x6 bumper and i hit that thing all over the place. it also only goes out 1/2 an inch past the hatch the 2x4 doesnt hang down much, its plenty strong
O and the mounts that mounted the bumper to the stock mounting points.. i used boxed up 3/16"

hope it gives u some ideas

I do agree that the best mounting system is a hitch, but im sure something can be made just as strong, without a hitch.

Witt,

What im looking to build is something quite similar to yours. How did you mount the 2x4? Did you just use the stock mounts and bolt it up like stock bumper? Also is how did you reinforce the integrated hitch? Was there any gusseting for the 2x2 1/4 panel protection? And one other question for ya. Any other pictures, during buildup or even mounting pictures? Thanks alot!

no gusseting for the 2x2
i did gusset the hitch tho.....

hope this gives u an idea of what i did....
O.. and the original welds came out perfectly... they were NOT booger welds....
they turned into booger welds after i tried to make the bumper airtight for 3 hours.... after 3 hours... 6 welding rods.. alot of grinding and frusturation... i gave up
