Bad Ground

No, but it would make the engine crank slowly/ hard to start. Perhaps some other gremlins too, but not backfiring through the intake. That's low fuel pressure or bad ignition timing.
 
Timing chain jumping a tooth or bad CMP (cam position sensor, in the distributor)
I've seen bad CPS's make 4.0's run like crap too, more than once.
OTOH low fuel pressure pops thru the intake more than most other issues.
