TJ shaft in D30 disco ?

As I go along installing my TJ shafts in my XJ Dana 30 Disconnect...I see inboard of the vacuum motor (closer to the pumpkin)a seated grooved collar. Not the shift collar that rides in the fork, but a similar one pressed into the axle tube. Now the 'new'long, one-piece TJ shaft will rest in the carrier and hub for support and passes through the middle of this grooved piece without touching it (the original disco axle is quite fat at the coupler area). Must I remove this, or is it harmless to remain in place? I can't find this piece on any blow-ups of the parts inside the D30 Disco, but it must have been some type of support for the intermediate shaft which is being removed.
