Oil filter swap?

I have read a few posts and articles on replacing oil filters with the 1 quart Ford 5.0 filter.

What I am wondering is what filter application does it replace?

My 88 MJ takes a different filter than my 94 YJ. They look identical, so I guess the difference is a standard vs metric thread.

And, when I go to the parts store, what year/make/model do I have to tell the computer key puncher I need a filter for?
