Aw4: Atf+3 Or Dexron III ?

I HAVE UNDERSTOOD THAT CHEROKEES XJ WITH AUTOMATIC TRANNY CAME WITH THE AW4.
HOWEVER THE QUESTION IS THE FOLLOWING ONE:
HERE IN VENEZUELA IF YOU GO TO A JEEP DEALER INDICATE TO YOU THAT The OIL OF TRANSMISSION AW4 IS The ATF+3, AT THE MOMENT OBTAINS ATF+4 And THEY SAY To YOU THAT YOU CAN USE IT WITHOUT PROBLEMS.
NEVERTHELESS MY OWNERS INSTRUCTIONS SAYS THAT THE ATF IS DEXRON III MERCON, CLEARLY.
- IN THE MANUAL OF XJ JEEP THAT GOT ON THE WEB SAYS THAT THE OIL OF THE AW4 IS DEXRON II (THEREFORE I CAN USE DEXRON III).
- IN A SPECIALIZED CENTER OF LUBRICATION (QUICKYLUB IN VZLA.) THEY PLACE DEXRON III OF MOBIL.

Use Dexron. The ATF+3 or +4 are fluids with additives that promote buttery smooth shifts. Basically, slip additives. If you want your trans to shift like butter, or possibly melt like butter, go for it. Otherwise use the Dexron to keep the firm, crisp shift that the AW4 is known for. Sorry for the sick analogy.

ATF+3 is not the same formulation as Dexron-III. You are correct, the AW4 transmission requires Dexron. Chrysler dealers try to use ATF+3 because all Chrysler transmissions use that fluid and that is what the dealers keep in their inventory. We have the same problem with some Chrysler dealers here in the U.S. who became Jeep dealers recently.

ATF+3 will result in early failure of the AW4 transmission.
