Front locker noise???

Just picked up a D30 with a Detorit E-Z locker int..before putting it in..it turned it by hand, and heard a clunking noise coming from the housing. Is this normal? I have never had a locked front axle before, so I'm not usre if this sound is normal....any help? Ideas?

yes some clunkin is normal it is a rachet style lunchbox locker, as the teeth go by each other it makes noise

I read that on another thread but wasnt sure,because it wasnt under load or anything just sitting on some jack stands...

have you pulled the cover off the diff to check out the insides yet? I think its still ok but I would check it out inside to be safee.

Not yet..got it last night..didnt have time..probably get to it tonight...I figure it'll be ok...just thought I would ask if anybody had similar sounds...

The ratcheting should only occur if you're spinning one wheel faster than the other. If the locker is UN-Locked as in making a turn on the road.
If the locker is locked up and both axles are spinning there should be no noise.
