i know some things changed.. but i have the french tranny and non c clip axles... did they change anything else to speak of?

Would an 87 FSM work for an 89? Need to know soon.

Some electical changes. The 87 doesn't have a fuel pump ballast resistor, for example. Tranny and axles -- yeah, they're mostly the same.
