Rusty Frame welding tips, anyone?

I have a small hole, about the size of a golf ball, on the frame where the front end of the leaf spring attaches to the frame. I am worried that the leaf spring will be ripped off the frame while rock crawling.
I have been apprehensive about cutting the rotten stuff off and welding a new piece in.
So my question is: If I cut out the rust should I just bend up a piece of 1/8 inch plate and weld it in? Should I reinforce this spot with a piece of plate that runs inside the framerail maybe a foot long and button weld it in then plate up the framerail itself? Or should I just sleeve the entire framerail?

I don't own a digital camera so I can't post any pics, (Sorry I spent the money on Jeep mods)

The former would work to patch the hole. The latter would be most secure.
Sounds like you have the situation in hand.
