i picked up a xj44 with tow package, and was wondering if it is possible that it has stock 4.10 gears and not 3.55. i opened the diff and the ring looks larger than 3.55.

heres the number from the ring and pinion

PS, if its 4.10's would i need to change carriers when going to 4.56 or 4.88?

Anything is possible...BUT the last 4 digits I believe are what determines the ratio. Yours are 46 13 46/13 is 3.538 (or 3.54) so chances are that's the ratio.

If it was a 4.10 then no you would not need to change carriers. The break for a D-44 is 3.92 and numerically lower and 3.93 and numerically higher.

That's 3.54 - as was noted, 46 (ring gear teeth)/13 (pinion teeth) = 3.54 and you'll need a new carrier.

the ring gear i bigger because its a d44. as already noted, its the number of teeth that determine the ratio.

thanks guys! i'm going to be changing the ratio, has anyone had experience running "thick gears" so no carrier change is needed? BTW how much is a new carrier?
