Engine braking with automatic gearbox

Ok I know this is probably really dumb of me but off road in 4wd lo I have never bothered putting the gearbox into first gear because I thought that like most automatics I wouldn't get any engine braking. On the weekend I was working the brakes a bit hard on a steep long downhill and threw it into low. Instant heaps of engine braking and control to the point where I didn't need to brake much at all.

So why am I posting? In case there are other dummies like me out there who haven't latched onto that. Have Jeep always had that feature on their automatic gear boxes?

This isn't a feature specific to Jeeps - it's just how automatics are meant to work. My old Rover P6 (Borg-Warner 35) and Peugeot 405 (Peugeot 4-speed auto) both did the same thing when put in first.
