Did the dash trim stay the same over the years? `96 trim fit an `88?

Yup, you're wrong. :D There's a difference in the column, since we went to the Chrysler column 'round about '92ish but I'm pretty sure the trimpiece on a 96 will fit an 88...I'll bet your last dollar on it ;)
 
I'm running one from a 95 on my 90 so... I say yes as well.
 
And the Chrysler steering column with the airbag wheel was introduced in 1995
