After turing on my XJ the engine started to sputter, while in reverse and drive. It seemed as if there was trouble with the automatic transmission engaging, because while in reverse and especially drive, the RPM's would shift randomly up and down and therefore jerking occured. ITs unusal because it almost felt as if there was a fuel pump or some time of fuel injection problem. Acceleration was minimized due to the increase and decrease of RPM's. There is no leaking from the transmission that I checked. THe "Check Engine" warning light came on, but That doesnt really help me in alnalyzing what is wrong. Any ideas. . .please help.
