Hi!

When I select the windshield defrost (far right position of upper heater lever) on my '92 XJ my A/C pump cycles on and off. Is this normal?

Thanks!

Yes. The AC runs so that it can take moisture from the air to reduce fogging.

I believe it is also wired this way to encourage the compressor to disperse lubrication throughout the system on a regular basis lessening the chances of seizing compressors from lack of use in the colder (non-usage) months.
