Plz help me w/ Gear Selector Adj

Call me stupid but.... I have spent the last 2 hrs trying to take just a little slack out of the gear selector cable. We are having to push the selector just a touch to far forward to get it to click into place, therefore pushing the cosmetic plastic peice in interior out of its selector housing. Cleaned the NSS no prob and have looked at my Haynes and searched websites for fix, but can't figure this one? I find it real hard to believe the I have to adjust the trans linkage arms to fix this??
Please help me b-4 I go crazy!

All you need to adjust is the NSS itself. Not the cable.
