5-speed XJ'ers, what gears are you running?

looking to regear mine, currently on 3.07's with 31's and it's pretty slow. looking at 4.10's or 4.56's as I will eventually be going with 33's or larger.

what do you guys recommend?

10.76:1.......Seriously, depends on what rear axle you have....If you have a Chrysler 8.25 you can only go to 4.56s. With a Dana 35 its questionable whether you should even run 33s. As to the question, I would say 4.10s...it won't kill your MPG and you will notice much better performance.

Hasta

search button is your friend here man, 4.56 is most common with 33" tires...

seriously, search tho

I'm running 3.07's with 35" Krawlers and it sucks ass. And I'm having a hell of a time trying to find 4.56's for the 8.25. Sucks, I tell ya.

i'm actually looking at a d44 with 4.56's, and keep in mind this is on my daily driver, doing mostly city miles.

also, sorry about that, I definitely should have searched first.

4.56's with 35" works out to roughly stock gearing. With a manual, I think I would want a touch lower gearing such as 4.88's for a mix of trail and street. I had AX-15 w/4.56's but with a 4.7L stroker. You need a touch lower gearing to overcome the inertia of the tires.

Engine RPM=Gear Ratio x Trans final drive x mph x 336/tire diameter

Ax-15 (.79 OD) 33" tires @ 70mph
5.13's = 2888 rpms
4.88's = 2747 rpms
4.56's = 2567 rpms
4.10's = 2308 rpms
3.50's = 1970 rpms

Ax-15 (.79 OD) 31" tires @ 70mph
5.13's = 3074 rpms
4.88's = 2924 rpms
4.56's = 2733 rpms
4.10's = 2457 rpms
3.50's = 2097 rpms

Decide where you want your rpms on the freeway and go for it.

If your axle can handle it and depnding how far down the road the 33's go 4.88's. I had 32's with 4.11's which felt nice and I had 4.88's which were amazing on the trail but I was limited more or less to abotu 70mph on the highway. Then I moved up to 33's (reason I Had 4.88's). In any case if I had to do it again I'd have 4.56's with 31's but I'd still be craving for 4.88's with the 33's :). Another way to attack it is look into getting 4.56's and later when that turns out to be insufficient for 33's get a 4:1.

I have stock 3.07's and 27.4" tires (225/70R15) tires on my XJ. The gearing was definitely too tall when my old 4.0 was stock. When I maxed out the performance mods on the 4.0, the gearing was still a bit too tall. Now that I have a stroker, the gearing's perfect.

one thing to consider is if you go to 4.56's or even 4.10's you might have to change the carrier. My buddies MJ has a D44 with 3.73's that originally had 3.07's. He wanted 4.10's but would have had to buy a new carrier and that gets expensive. Not a big difference between 3.73 and 4.10, but a huge difference compared to the 3.07's. Why did jeep ever use the 3.07's anyway?

:confused: new carrier is only $50, and it's a perfect excuse to make it expensive by getting a full case locker. Anyways if he has an 8.25 rear IIRC there is no carrier break and only the front would need one.

He mentioned that he's planning to go to 33's down the road.... so why do it many times? I lost money doing 2 regears: once when I went to 4.11's for the 31's and then the second time when I got 4.88's for the 33's. Do it once and save money in the long run :D Credit cards are jeeps best friend :D Oh and yeah, I had 4.11's and 31's and I was happy I got the 4.11's and regretted I didn't get 4.56s. I did consider 3.73 and I'm happy that people talked me out of that idea.

an open carrier is only $50? We didn't even look at one. We looked at detroit locker and power lok. Since it already had a tracloc that worked great we stuck with that. He only runs 30's right now, so yeah, he may want those 4.56's when he moves to 33's. Hey, i'm new to this.

Well you have to consider everything. Gears and carrier is one thing and a locker is another. Also depending on the gears chosen and axle you can sometimes get thick gears which let you run the same carrier and whatever is inside it. And choosing gears because of how much $$ you have to spend is a bad idea. Someone told me once that if you don't have the $$ either don't do the mod or don't be cheap on it cause you pay double for going cheap.

4.56 W/31 OR 32" 4.88 WITH 33" OR 35" Hell I'm going 5.38 with 35" and a stick!!!!

so what are 3.73's going to be like on the road with 33's? Is it going to be real sluggish? Poor mileage? the only 4x4 I've been in to compare it to is my RAM with a cummins diesel, 33's with 3.54's. When I put that in low range NOTHING stops it. I've hooked it to giant pine trees and the wheels, all 4 just dig holes. I have little experince with the 4.0 so I'm not sure how the 3.73's will do off road. Will they suck?

I am going with hpd44/9",5:13/5:14's, it'll buzz the motor on the road, but I wont be driveing roads much with the new one.

I run AX-15/ 33's/ 8.25 rear/30 front/ 4.10's. Perfect on the highway and decent enough in town, but wish I had 4.56's on city streets and wish I had 5.13's off-road. If I had lower gears I'd never take long trips on the highway though. I'm thinking a Klune-V sounds the best now.
