The passenger axle seal in my D44 has been leaking for almost a year. I decided to replace the seal over the weekend and now it is leaking 10 times worse than before. I pulled the shaft again last night and it appears to be leaking from the inner surface of the seal.
When I inserted the seal on the shaft, I used some grease to protect the surface of the seal. Was this a bad thing to do? Would gear oil have been a better choice?
I'm going to take another shot at it tonight using a spare shaft that I have and just wanted to see what the experts recommend for lube. (No KY jokes necessary.)
