It's on a '01 TJ...harmonic balancer? Will a hack-n-tap remove it?
 
Yeah, it's a counterweight to reduce NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) from the driveshaft. This is the type of thinking Chrysler used when they designed the Liberty. They know that long unsupported tailshaft causes vibrations, but instead of using a short shaft output (SYE, like on the Rubicon), they just hung a weight on it to try to conceal the problem from buyers.
 
Thanks Eagle, that's what I thought it was as well but wanted to get some other eyes on it. Is it removable for when the owner does a hack-n-tap, or should they get a new tailshaft w/o the addon doodad?
