OK, a friend's XJ wouldn't start, so I check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail and we're good. Then we unplug the 3 wire connector that goes to the distributor to see if that's getting any power. With the key in start, but not cranking, we get nothing. So we try cranking it to see if we get power then... AND THE FRIGGIN' THING STARTS! Not only that, but it runs just fine - no missing, no backfiring for a good 60 seconds with the distributor pickup unplugged! How is that possible??? We plugged it back in and a few minutes later, it starts and runs fine. Try unplugging it again just for curiosity sake to see if it'll start and it won't... but I swear it did!
