Painting / coating a roll cage - need ideas....

Well, I've got an interior cage now and I've still got some work to do to finish it, but got to thinking down the road - what to do about covering the metal?

I know most just mask the heck outta the interior and rattle-can the tubes. But have any of you done anything different? I'd like to find something a bit less messy than spray paint.

Also, where to find tube padding and racing harnesses.

Thanks!
Troy

is it out of the question to take the larger portions of the cage out before permenantly mounting it and paint it? Then once you put them back in only the places where it needs to be connected to itself and the vehicle need to be painted.... then just mask alot around those joints and be careful. sure would be easier than painting the ENTIRE cage inside the vehicle.

Also, www.speedwaymotors.com is a good place for harnesses. jegs has padding... only comes in 36" sections though... not sure where to find longer pieces

What I did was paint as much as I could before installing/welding it. Masking off everything and spraying the rest once installed really isn't a big deal if you take your time.
This is where I got my belts and harness...

...I'm using the 3" lap belts and 2" shoulder harness.
I got my roll bar padding at a local speed shop.

Hey Troy, let me know what you come up with for padding. I need to get moving on my painting/padding as well (assume you got the D&C cage, too?).

I'm probably just going to spray...anything else would take forever.

I got my harnesses from PRP seats...they look just like the Crow harnesses that Jes linked, and about the same price. If you want a fancier latching mechanism, Corbeau is selling a system that locks all five points into a cam and would probably be a bit easier operationally and less bulky, i.e., if you are still going to daily drive it this may be preferable.

I just painted mine this weekend. I called up a buddy that owed me a favor and we went to town on masking off the whole thing.

I tried to roll the paint on at first with a small roller, but it just wouldn't stick....and it looked crappy.

I never did try a small brush though.

Yes, it was a pain to do....and it did take the better part of the day....but I'm happy with the results.

Try rustolum brush on paint.

It flows out nice and can barely tell it was brushed on. Makes for less masking just use some thin cardboard behind the areas that you are painting.

Just make sure the paint is covered by your sanctioning body! :D

I've had good luck using POR-15 paint on cages. The good thing is that it dries hard as heck and just will not chip. For the inside you don't have to worry about UV protection. I use a combination of 1" and 1.5" foam brushes. It goes on smooth and doesn't drip. You can get good coverage and control and then just throw the brushes away. Hammerite is my second choice. Both deal with any existing rust and get extremely hard. Hammerite in the spray can works well, and I have also used it in the quart and gallon cans. If you need some, I still have some of their thinner left over you can have.

Sounds like you are making progress on the rig. Will you be able to make the ColoradoFest in August? If you want to do some wheeling during the week, my schedule is flexible.

I agree POR 15 would be a good choice. I used it for my Currie HP 9", and it went on very smooth with a foam brush. As pointed out, that stuff dries amazingly hard.

You guys suck for not telling me BEFORE I spray painted my cage. :p

A 9" is one thing....it's not quite as smooth as new tubing....I wonder if it would look the same.

Where do you find POR 15?

'Wreck, one place to get Por15 is here: www.por15.com But you might have better luck at a local paint and supply store. That's where I got mine, and without shipping, it was cheaper than with shipping when ordering from 'da net.

This is what Por-15 looks like after it's dried.

Remember, a LOT of it goes a LONG way. I did my whole rear axle, a few skid plates, both drivelines, both leaf springs, couple coats on a large rear bumper, couple coats on a large gas skid plate and a couple coats on a large front bumper and still had some left over. All that with a Pint. $21.

By the way they have gloss and satin finished and now are offering a range of colors from what I hear. LOL

D@mn! I knew that I should have used a foam brush when I painted my rock rails with POR-15. I have some fairly obvious brush strokes in the finish. . .
