transfer case 242 vs 231

my wife and i have an xj with 4 liter engine auto trans with 242 trans case. My wife busted the t-case up cracking the case. My question is can i use a 231 inplace of the 242 t-case and what problems will i run into. both t-case have the same spline count 23. thanks in advance.

yep, just don't use 4wd on pavement

Yes you can swap the 231 for the 242, if the splines are same then no problems. I just got done doing this, i blew up my 242, so i picked up a 231 at the local junk yard and a AA Sye. Its all good... I am asuming the 231 came out of a cherokee as well.... Good luck

actually, one thing i forgot to mention, there are different 23 spline input gears, check out the chart here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/231_input_gears.htm

I just blew up my 242 i have the a chance at getting a 231 out of a 97 TJ will it work?

off topic kinda, but how can i strengthen my 242... I don't want to give up the Full-Time 4wd if i blow up my tc... but if i break it, theres no sense in staying with the same design to break it again...
