did a search and was wondering if anyone recently did them using the techniques discussed in other threads......i am doing it on a 91 and like everything else on the rig i am expecting it to be a challenging two day project....so any advice would be great
thanks

you refering to axle u-joints? if so it shouldn't take you two days. make sure you have a 36mm socket a 13mm (i think?) 12 point socket and either air tools or a big breaker bar. a ball joint press or bench vise can be used to press the new joint caps in the ears if a shop press is not handy.

thanks guys....keep it coming
should i expect to have to replace hubs...how likely is it that they come apart?

since you have a 91 if the hubs haven't been replaced before they are more likely to be bad, but are not necessarily. for a quick check jack up one tire with a floor jack under the axle tube, grab the tire at the 12 and 6 position and shake back and forth. if you have any movement either the ball joints of hubs are bad.

if you need hubs look into tapco international. i bought some from them a few weeks ago and will be installing them just as soon as i can get to it. tapco will have them for 1/3 to 1/2 the price of everyone else.

Do you have a part number? I can't seem to find them on their website.

Edit: Found it. 53007449 That is for up to 97 models. I'm assuming this will work on my 2000 since it's essentially the same axle, just low pinion. Right?

honestly i'm not sure, mine's a 96 so it never mattered to me.

just use a socket big enough so the bottom cap can push through. and use a smaller socket or a small bolthead and beat the top of u-joint down w/a hammer to push the u-joint cap down into the bigger socket. hit it hard and keep it strait takes about 10mins to take out and put in.

I've changed many u-joints, but found this article quite useful. http://www.jantz4x4.com/products/jantzjoint/jantzjoint.html BTW, I was quoted $220 for a set of these joints. That's cheaper than CTM's at $185 each, cheaper than OX joints at $139 each (http://broncograveyard.com/products/cat/0/207/12189/) and more expensive than Longfields at $80 each (http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com) as well as these from Tom LeBlanc at $50 each (http://www.sn-fab.com/images/retail/ujoint.html.) I opted for a locally purchased NAPA part from Japan. :dunno: Jeff

Thats funny,

the joints he is calling Jantz joints look an awful lot like the New Yukon super joints that are now shipping. of course they are just now becoming available.
I will have a set tomorrow

You are right about prices of Tapco hubs. $86 vs $153 at Car Quest or $213 at NAAPA. How about the quality?

well i haven't installed them yet, so no real opinions right now, but they look top notch. here's a pic...
