Colorado NAXJA group,

I will be visiting the Breckenridge & Leadville areas area between the dates of June 12th & June 19th and I am researching trail conditions. I know that for some trail runs mid June is early in the year…

 What are some good online resources to help me plan my trip? I know of the website http://www.4x4trails.net. Others??

I have a 2001 XJ with the “upcountry” package, recovery gear and stock tires – so I am looking for easy to moderate trails. I am especially concerned about tails that are excessively muddy. (I know, I will get new treads soon but not before this trip)

 I have heard that Mosquito Pass is nice. Which of the other easy to moderate trails around Breckenridge & Leadville should I also consider?

Many thanks in advance for any info you can provide!!!

4x4trails.net is the best site I know of....that and these books are fairly good too- http://www.cohvco.org/ca4wdci/web_pgs/store.shtml -somebody on Kingston Peak trail had the 2nd book and it was fairly informative.
After the 1st 4 books is this one- "Guide to Colorado Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails - It highlights popular trails from I-70 south", I haven't seen it yet, but looks good and I want to check it out. Here's another site for books- http://www.funtreks.com/all_books.htm
Hope others can direct you to more online resources, I'd be interested in them too.
Good Luck- RJ

Did a little research this weekend and found this site. It allows people who have taken trails to update the status of the trails they have taken or know about. It is still in its infancy and could use contributions from us as well.

Below is another website for finding current trail info. It's been around longer and so has a better chance of having more trails. At the same time, it doesn't get updated nearly as often.

June may be too early to run most trails around that area. It sometimes takes until 4th July for Mosquito to open.

But winter was dry, and spring was early in the high country so you may be lucky. I don't know too many easy trails, but look around Montezuma which is near Keystone (about 8 miles from Breck) as there are trails there the Jeep and Hummer tours use. They are very scenic, visit some old mining sites, and are not too difficult. Also a little lower than most trails in the area so the snow should be melted.

The Wells book is a good resource as are the websites already mentioned.

You could also try the ranger station at the Leadville exit off I-70, the next exit west of the westernmost Vail exit.

There is a trail I run every year just outside Leadville in Camp Hale. They held the jeep jamboree one year, I always go up there for the Colorado Bow Hunter's Assoc. jamboree. Last year they were cleaning up some unexploded ordinance so some trails might be closed. They were supposed to have been finished last summer though. I'll be going up there again July 15-18.
