3 inch blocks????

I want to lift my xj about 3 inches, A friend of mine has done it and is going bigger, I don't want to be too far behind him. Is it going to be alright to put 3 inch blocks in the rear, and a 3 inch coil in the front? what about axle wrap, this is my only car, so if it breaks I am screwed. is there a cheaper way than blocks to lift the back end???
