I believe ive read here that most 87's with the 2.5L come with the t5 5 speed transmission where do i find on the tranny what model # I have it seems to be a 4 speed or maybe something is wrong with the shifter linkage ?
:D

The specified 5-speed for the early 4-cylinder XJs was an AX-5, but for the first couple of years they had some supply problems and also used T-5s. I don't think they were still using T-5s by 1987.

The 4-cylinders also came with either a 4-speed or a 5-speed. The 4-speed was an AX-4. It's very possible that your tranny is acting like a 4-speed because it is a 4-speed.

my 87 originally came with the AX-4, but I have swapped in an AX-5 cuz it was my DD for a while...those damn things eat slave cylinders every 2-3 years, but I haven't had any other trouble. the 5th gear is a straight overdrive/cruising gear, you get almost zilch power out of it. Most of the time I even skip by 4th cuz you can run 3rd gear almost to red line and it feels like it never leaves the powerband, well mine does anyway.

oh BTW you have a 4.10 gear ratio too

He shouldn't, if it's a 4-speed. My '88 4-cyl 4-speed MJ has 3.54 gears and it appears to be all original. I'm only the second owner, and I know I didn't change it.

thanks all :sunshine: It probably is a 4 speed I just seen a post that said they came with 5 speeds I am new to jeeps
got this one for $300 after my escort was totalled while it was parked.
I'm not sure about the rear gears but I know on the freeway in 4th at 60 it seems to be reving pretty good
by the way it's a 87 cherokee 2 door

I have been told along by everyone under the sun that ALL 4cyl manuals came with 4.10s...regardless of 4 or 5 spd.....is there any way of figuring out for sure without pulling the diff cover?

NEVER assume anything with AMC era Jeeps....don't ask me how I know :dunce:

You can check the tag on the front axle, if it's there and/or readable, but the surest way is to pull the cover. Don't go thru the hassle of counting teeth, the count will be stamped along the side surface of the ring gear. It's a set of two numbers all by themselves, i.e. 37 9, 46 13, etc.. Good excuse to change the fluid also.

I am 100% sure I have 4.10s or else I would have grenaded my driveline by now if I were wrong.

After Chrysler took over, they standardized on 4.10 for the 4-cylinder XJs, but AMC used different ratios depending on transmission and tow package. The rears were not marked. If you're lucky there should be a tag on the front diff that indicates the gear ratio. Obviously this is no help if you have a 2WD.
