NP242 Alternatives

What's a good alternative to replacing, as opposed to rebulding the NP242 ... without extensive, if any, modifications.

I have an AW4.

Can the 231 bolt-in without any mechanical alterations ?

Does the shift-lever and select mechanism need to be modified ?

Are there other options ?

I swapped out a balky 242 and replaced it with a same-year 231. Newer trannys have 23 spline output and older (87-90ish) have 21 splines. Be sure of what you have now and what you are buying...especially if yours is a crossover year.

I don't rememebr if I used the adjustable linkage rod from the 231 or the 242...the lever & linkage attached under the tunnel is compatible with either.

The shift-pattern bezel is different, grab one from a 231 if ya go that route.

The other tcase options are a flipped 300 or an Atlas II. More mods and/or more bux...
