front axle shaft question

I have replaced the hub and u-joint on the front drivers side and all went well.(first time) Today I started on the pass side and everything went well except that I thought I needed to remove the shift motor to get the axle shaft out. The hub came out in two pieces and I tugged on the axle shaft and it came right out. It is an 87' with a D30 front axle. It does have the vacuum shift motor. Somebody please let me know if this indicated a problem, what do i need to check before I reassemble? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
