wont start right

i crank my jeep ove and it wont idle, it just dies but after the 1st time it will start jus fine. i have replaced the feul filter which was said to be the problem but it still wont start right. its a 90 xj with a 4.0 auto

Here are a couple of possibilities. Your fuel system has a check valve to keep pressure on the fuel rail. If it goes bad then it can act like you describe. Let the fuel pump run for a few seconds before starting to see if it starts right up. Second is of course the fuel pump. Check your pressure if you have a gauge. Hope this helps.
