CLUNK while breaking on slippery surface in 2WD

What the HAIL is going on?! Just started yesterday. When I break (hard) on a slippery surface (in 2WD) the whole truck CLUNKS ! Just about knocked the fillings out of my teeth. It breaks fine - but makes a terrible CLUNK. This morning on a dry surface is was fine - I couldn't make it CLUNK at all, even when standing on the breaks at 60mph!

Is this the ABS, or is it transmission related? An ideas?

Is this a single clunk or multiple clunks one after another, chatter type?

Chatter type might be abs.

Simple...
You ran over some slippery snow squirrels

 Oh well…I tried.

How many times did this happen?
Since you think that it may be the ABS or transmission, did this seem to come from the middle-to-front end?
Did you switch to 4wd and try the same thing?
How hard were you on the brakes?
Where you trying to lock the wheels?
Slippery? (wet, snow, ice?)

Last night (rain/sleet):
It happened several times over a 2 hour period. The clunk came from
"everywhere" - really weird. I did not switch to 4WD. I wasn't trying to
lock the wheels - but I did lay hard on the breaks. If I "eased" the breaks
it wouldn't repeat - but when I layed on them - CLUNK! The surface was
more "wet" than icy. At first I though it was coming from the real drivers
side wheel, then it felt like everywhere.....

This morning:
Perfect - dry pavement, breaking hard several times produced nothing.
I tried over and over to reproduce it - but no luck. Squealed the tires
once - no CLUNK.

That is really weird. I don't have a definite answer. However, I would initially suspect that the moisture somehow affected the brakes. You might want to take off the wheels and inspect the hardware for something broken/loose/worn. Also, even though it's a stock rig, you should check the u-bolts holding on the leaf-springs. One might be loose which can cause a clunk.

Do you feel any difference in the brake pedal pressure when this happens? Specifically at the time of the clunk?

MY rear brakes (D44) will clunk when wet. They also like to stick to the drums if not driven after being hosed off....

I would suspect it's time to inspect your rear brakes....
