Checking engine codes on a 2001

My emissions/tranny light recently came on in my 2001 sport and I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve the codes? It seems like the on-off trick doesnt work on the 2001 and my local shop wants 80 bucks to read the codes.

The jeep drove fine all day then I go to start it to drive home and it is bucking like a bronco. The engine was idling rougher than any diesel Ive ever been in. I gave it some gas around the parking lot and the rough idle went away.

If you have AutoZone stores there in KY they should be able to read your codes for you (free) - check the competitors as well... --
