Here is a tip to recondition your worn /sloppy wiper mechanism.
I cut off the old balls and the linkage between the two wipers, and replace them with a new set of ball joints and a threaded rod cut and bent to the right length. The ball joints are similar to those on the end of the pressurised gas springs on the liftgate. I have now all steel instead of the old plastic parts. I have used this for 3-4 years now.
