So burnt out from working on multiple cars today.... this is where I'm at with 0.005 backlash.

It's running USA Gear 4.56, setup bearings and old crush sleeve, and original "31" shim.

Pinion depth needs to be increased

Ok.... Started with .031, and added .04

Take .002 out and try again.

It's good that you went too far, so you can see the middle.

On pinion depth .002 can make a noticeable difference.

Your first pattern was the best, what you have here is still too close. The flat line at the bottom is a dead give away. I try to get a nice oval, but you may not be able to do that here. You could go to .027 or .029 if you wanted and see how it looks. That way you know for sure you're in between. This is a quick chart to look at

The half moon pointing down from the top indicate its off, go back to 031. Now you know 031 is the best pattern.
