97 XJ with ABS light, no tach, no speedometer

A couple of weeks ago the ABS light on my Jeep came on. Everything else was working normally.

Today the ABS light came on and I had no tach and no speedometer. Then it went away and the gauges came back up.

Searching suggests its the contacts in the instrument cluster - they've oxidized and need to be cleaned.

Is this correct? Or should I do more searching and investigation before I tear into it.

Doesn't hurt to check the contacts. Also check all the ground points and wires under the hood. There's some by the air box, the ground strap by the windshield, etc.
