XJ Shifter Problems

So after working around removing my console it came time to put my shifter knob back on and it was being a pain so i got pissed and hit the top really hard, now the shifter won't lock in place and i can't use the knob on it at all. Meaning that i can freely slide through the gears, need help asap

Pull the t-handle off and try again. Inside the shift stalk is a white button that gets depressed and allows you to move from gear to gear. The button is activated when you depress the handle button with your thumb.

The fact that the shifter won't lock into gear tells me you jammed the t-handle on too hard, past the point of where it needs to be. All you need to do is slide it on and give it a little knock with the base of your palm.
