OK I have two xj's one is a 1990 4.0 with automatic transmission this has a blown motor but all the running gear is sound. The other is a 1996 H.O. also an automatic but has no transfer case or drive lines in it I know that many parts as far as body and interior can be swapped out but can I take the transfer case and drivelines out of the 1990 and install it into the 96?

So I can take the transfer case out of the 1990 and install it in the 96 or I can't I'm not sure I understand that the 96 came with the 23 spline that is that mean that I can't install a 21 spline onto that transmission or do I have to swap both transmission and transfer case what do I need to do to make it work

Inputs won't swap from 90 to 96.
The gear cut changed between 1993-94.
Find an early 23 spline input to put in it.

You could but I would rather have the 23 spline.
If you ever need a trans again it will be 87-90 only.
And t case work is a lot easier
