Transmission identification

I have a 2001 jeep Cherokee. My wife thought one of the kids was choking on something while driving. So, logically, she immediately slammed the gear shifter into park! Needless to say, I need to replace the tranny. I found a replacement but want to make sure that it is compatible. Anyway to identify the year of the tranny by the id plate?

The plot thickens. I inadvertently purchased an AW4 tranny thinking it was a 42RE. Will the AW4 fit in this situation (ie will it mate up with the 247 transfer case or do i have to use a 42RE?

Just because she put it into park doesn't mean it is necessarily trashed. The parking pawl is designed to slip if enough force is put onto it. What are the symptoms that lead you to think that it is broken?

The 42RE would be the wrong transmission. Those never came in the Cherokee.
